Hi, I’m James Gates a legally blind photographer and a proud Detroiter who fell in love with capturing the city from perspectives that many overlook. My vision may be limited, but photography has opened a world of clarity, creativity, and connection that goes far beyond what my eyes can see.
I’m especially drawn to blue hour photography—that brief, magical window when Detroit glows in deep blues, soft gradients, and scattered reflections. The quiet atmosphere, the gentle light, and the stillness of the city at that time allow me to create images that feel both calm and electric.
But my passion doesn’t stop there. I find inspiration in many forms of photography, including:
Architecture – From historic landmarks to modern structures, I love capturing the character and craftsmanship that shape Detroit’s skyline.
Street Photography – The candid energy of everyday life, the small interactions, and the raw stories that make the city feel alive.
Cityscapes – Wide views, glowing lights, and the urban rhythm that reveals Detroit’s strength, resilience, and spirit.
Living with low vision has influenced not only how I photograph, but how I experience the world. While it may take more time, it also gives my work a unique depth and perspective.
Through my photography, I hope to show others the Detroit I feel: vibrant, evolving, and filled with hidden beauty.
Thanks for being here and supporting my journey. I’m excited to share my vision of the city—one frame at a time.
